Radio & CTAF, Without the Mystery

Airplane radio chatter sounds like a secret language until someone hands you the decoder ring. Here's how traffic calls at small airports actually work — and why a drone pilot who listens is a drone pilot who's rarely surprised.

What CTAF Actually Is

A lot of small airports — including most of the strips scattered around the Panhandle — have no control tower at all. Nobody is directing traffic. Instead, pilots coordinate themselves on a shared radio channel called the CTAF: the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency. Nearly every non-towered field has one, and for charted airports it's printed right on the sectional.

On the CTAF, pilots broadcast where they are and what they're about to do, and everyone else builds a mental picture from those calls. That's most of the system — no clearances, no controller, just pilots announcing themselves. But it's not all of it: radios aren't required at non-towered fields, so some aircraft carry none and some pilots simply don't make calls. A quiet frequency never means clear skies. The CTAF adds warning on top of your visual scan — it never replaces your eyes.

Why should a drone pilot care? Because Part 107 says you yield to all manned aircraft, period. If you're shooting a listing or a construction site a couple of miles from a small field, a cheap handheld airband receiver tuned to the CTAF tells you a Cessna is inbound before you can see or hear it. That's minutes of extra warning for the price of listening.

Anatomy of a Traffic Call

Traffic calls follow a predictable script: who you're talking to, who you are, where you are, what you intend to do, and the airport name again at the end. Something like: "Marianna traffic, Skyhawk Three-Five-Bravo, five miles west, inbound for landing, Marianna." Airport name twice — that's the wrapper so anyone tuning in mid-call knows which field the traffic is at.

Letters come through in the aviation phonetic alphabet — Alpha, Bravo, Charlie — because "B" and "D" and "E" sound identical on a scratchy radio. Tail numbers like N735B become "November Seven-Three-Five-Bravo." Once you know the pattern, calls stop sounding like code and start sounding like a weather report: position, direction, intention.

One detail that trips people up: positions in those calls are relative to the airport, not to you. "Five miles west" means five miles west of the field. Your first job when you hear a call is to place that aircraft on your mental map relative to where you're flying.

Your Job Is to Listen

Here's the part that surprises new remote pilots: you almost never need to talk. Drone operations near non-towered fields are overwhelmingly a listening game. You're not in the traffic pattern, you're not landing, and manned pilots aren't expecting drone calls cluttering the frequency. Monitor, build the picture, keep scanning the sky, and stay out of the way.

Manned traffic at a non-towered field typically flies a pattern around 1,000 feet above the ground with left turns, so calls like "downwind" and "final" tell you an aircraft is low, close, and maneuvering. When you hear inbound traffic, the smart move on a shoot is simple: descend, hold, or land until it passes. I've paused a roof orbit mid-shoot for exactly this — the clip waits, the right-of-way doesn't.

If a day ever comes where you do need to transmit, radio discipline rule one applies: listen before you key up. Never step on another pilot's call. But for most of your career near small fields, the win is one-directional — the CTAF talks, you listen, and everybody lands with a boring story.
