Emergencies & Lost Link

One day your controller screen will say "signal lost" and your aircraft will be up there making decisions without you. Whether that moment is a shrug or a disaster depends entirely on what you did before takeoff.

Your drone already has a plan — do you know what it is?

When the control link drops, your aircraft doesn't panic and it doesn't wait for you. It flies whatever failsafe behavior is programmed into it — for most drones, that's return-to-home (RTH): climb to a set altitude, fly back to the recorded home point, land. The aircraft will do this whether or not you remember setting it up.

That's the whole game right there. The failsafe must be SET and KNOWN before every flight. Not "I think it's on RTH." Known. What altitude will it climb to? Where is the home point recorded — under your feet, or back at the truck where you powered on? Some aircraft can be set to hover or land in place instead of returning. If you don't know which behavior is loaded, you can't predict where your aircraft is going the moment you lose it.

On a real estate shoot this takes thirty seconds during preflight: confirm the home point locked where you're standing, confirm the RTH altitude, confirm the failsafe mode. Thirty seconds, every flight, no exceptions.

IMPORTANT

RTH typically flies a straight line home at the altitude you set. If your RTH altitude is 100 feet and there's a cell tower, crane, or tree line at 150 feet between the aircraft and home, you have programmed a collision. Before every flight, ask: what's the tallest thing on this site, and does my RTH altitude clear it with margin? On construction shoots especially — that crane wasn't there last month.

Lost link vs. flyaway — two different problems

A lost link is usually recoverable. Your job: keep your eyes on the aircraft. Maintaining visual line of sight is what lets you reacquire the link — often just by moving a few steps, raising the controller antennas toward the aircraft, or clearing whatever obstruction (a building, a metal roof) got between you. Meanwhile the aircraft is flying its failsafe, and because you verified it preflight, you know exactly where it's headed. Walk toward the home point, watch it come back, be ready to take control the moment the link returns.

A flyaway is the uglier cousin: the aircraft isn't responding and isn't executing its failsafe — it's just going. Keep watching it as long as you can, note its heading and altitude, and if you're operating near controlled airspace, notify ATC. An unresponsive drone drifting toward an airport's traffic is exactly the thing controllers need to know about immediately, so manned pilots can be warned.

The two rules that back you up

First, 107.21: in an in-flight emergency, the remote pilot in command may deviate from any Part 107 rule to the extent required to meet that emergency. If the safest response to a failing aircraft means breaking a rule you'd normally follow, the regulation itself gives you that authority. The FAA may ask you for a written report of the deviation afterward — if they request it, you provide it.

Second, 107.9, the accident-reporting rule. You must report to the FAA within 10 days if your operation causes serious injury to any person, any loss of consciousness, or damage to property (other than the drone itself) exceeding $500 in repair or replacement cost. Bumping your own landing gear doesn't trigger it. Putting a drone through a client's window that costs $600 to replace does.

Know both numbers cold — 107.21 is your permission to act, 107.9 is your obligation afterward. And on anything abnormal short of a full emergency — twitchy controls, a battery warning, strange behavior — the answer is simple: land immediately. A LiPo battery acting up is not a problem you solve at altitude.

On lost link, the aircraft flies its programmed failsafe — for most drones that's return-to-home at the preset altitude, which is exactly why you verify that setting preflight. "Hover until the battery dies" is only true if you deliberately set hover as the failsafe. "Land immediately" isn't a Part 107 requirement and isn't the default on most platforms. And a lost link is not automatically a flyaway — the aircraft is following its programming, not flying uncontrolled, and calling ATC is the move for a genuine flyaway near controlled airspace, not the first response to a dropped link.
