Sooner or later a client hands you an address that sits a mile from an airfield. Here's how airports actually work — towered and non-towered — and how to read the environment so you can fly the job without ever getting in a manned pilot's way.
Two kinds of airports, two very different soundscapes
Every airport falls into one of two buckets. Towered airports have air traffic control — a person in the cab directing who lands, who takes off, and who holds. Pilots there follow ATC instructions, and the airspace around a towered field is usually controlled, which for us means LAANC authorization before we launch anywhere inside it.
Non-towered airports have nobody in charge. Pilots coordinate themselves by self-announcing on a shared frequency called the CTAF — position and intentions, so everyone builds a mental picture of who's where. Most of the small airfields scattered across North Florida work exactly this way.
Here's the trap: 'no tower' does not mean 'no traffic.' A quiet grass strip can go from empty to two aircraft in the pattern in the time it takes you to set up a tripod. At a non-towered field, the only warning you get is the one you listen for.
The traffic pattern: where manned aircraft live down low
Most manned aircraft approach an airport predictably: they fly a rectangular circuit called the traffic pattern — typically 1,000 feet AGL, with left turns as the standard. It's how pilots sequence themselves for landing and keep each other predictable.
The pattern matters to you because it's where manned aircraft are lowest and busiest. On final approach and initial climb-out, airplanes pass right through drone altitudes — and they do it off the runway ends, beyond the airport fence, sometimes over the exact neighborhood you were hired to shoot. A pilot on final is focused on the runway, not scanning for a quadcopter.
That's why the rule under 107.37 is absolute: drones yield the right of way to all manned aircraft. Not when it's convenient, not only inside the fence — always. If an aircraft is approaching, you give way immediately: descend, move aside, or land. Never expect a helicopter or a Cessna to maneuver around you — the yield obligation is entirely yours.
Reading the airport before a nearby shoot
Say a listing comes in a mile from a small airfield — common in rural Florida, where half the towns grew up around a strip. Before quoting the shoot, check the sectional or a current airspace app: is the field towered or non-towered, and is the property under controlled airspace? Controlled means LAANC first. Uncontrolled means you can fly under Part 107's normal rules, but the homework isn't done yet.
Next, listen. Airports broadcast weather over ATIS, AWOS, or ASOS, and at a non-towered field you can monitor the CTAF with an inexpensive aviation radio to hear who's in the pattern before and during your flight. Note where the runway points, because arrivals and departures will be low along those extended lines — if your shoot sits off a runway end, that's the direction traffic comes from.
On site, keep solid VLOS and put a visual observer on airplane duty if you can — one person flying, one person watching and listening. The moment you see or hear traffic inbound, get down and give way. A missed shot costs you a retake. This is exactly the kind of planning that separates a certified pilot doing paid work from someone winging it.
