Controlled Airspace and LAANC

Some airspace you can fly the moment you arrive; some requires the FAA's okay first. Here's how to tell the difference — and how LAANC turns that okay into a few taps on your phone.

Two kinds of sky

Every shoot you'll ever fly happens in one of two kinds of airspace: controlled or uncontrolled. Controlled airspace — Class B, Class C, Class D, and Class E that starts at the surface — wraps around airports where the FAA is managing arriving and departing traffic. If your drone is going up inside any of those, you need FAA authorization before takeoff. Not after, not 'if somebody asks' — before the props spin.

Almost everywhere else near the ground is Class G, uncontrolled airspace, and this is where Part 107 gives you real freedom. No authorization, no waiting, nobody to ask. Follow the standard rules — 400 feet, visual line of sight, daylight or proper night setup — and you can go to work. A huge share of rural and small-town real estate flying, including most of my own, is Class G. Technically, Class E airspace also exists overhead almost everywhere, usually starting 700 or 1,200 feet up — but since it doesn't start at the surface, it needs no authorization. Below that floor, you're in Class G.

The catch: you can't tell which one you're in by looking out the window. A quiet neighborhood two miles from a towered airport can sit inside Class D surface airspace. You check a sectional chart or an airspace app every single time — that habit is what separates working pilots from people collecting violations.

Controlled airspace (B, C, D, and surface E) stacks around airports in layers. If your flight touches one of those layers, you need authorization first. Class G underneath is yours under standard Part 107 rules.

LAANC: authorization in seconds, not weeks

LAANC — the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability — is how you actually get that authorization for most flights. It's a data link between the FAA and a set of approved apps. You open the app, drop a pin on your shoot location, enter your requested altitude and time window, and the system checks your request against the airspace rules for that exact spot.

The magic word is near-real-time. If your request fits inside the pre-approved limits, the authorization typically comes back in seconds — fast enough to handle it from the driveway of the listing. Where LAANC isn't available, you can request authorization manually through FAA DroneZone instead, but that's a slower process, so plan those jobs well ahead.

The grid system: UAS Facility Maps

How does the FAA approve you in seconds? They did the analysis in advance. Controlled airspace around each airport is divided into grid squares called UAS Facility Maps. Each square carries a number — the maximum altitude ATC has pre-cleared for automatic drone authorization in that square.

The pattern makes intuitive sense: squares near the edge of the airspace might show 400, stepping down to 200, 100, or 50 as you get closer to the runways, with zeros right at the approach and departure paths. Request at or below the grid number and LAANC says yes almost instantly. Need more than the number allows? That takes a further coordination request, and approval is not automatic.

For a working pilot, the grid number is a planning tool. Before I quote a shoot near a towered airport, I check the grid over the property. A 100-foot ceiling still covers most residential real estate work. A zero grid means I have a conversation with the client about timelines before I promise anything.

IMPORTANT

The 400-foot altitude limit and airspace authorization are two separate gates. Being under 400 feet does NOT mean you're cleared to fly in Class B, C, D, or surface E — and having a LAANC authorization doesn't let you bust the grid ceiling. You need both squared away, every flight.

Class D surface airspace requires ATC authorization before you fly, and LAANC is how you get it — near-real-time, up to the grid ceiling, which here is 100 feet. The 400-foot rule is a separate altitude limit, not permission to enter controlled airspace, which is exactly why the first option trips people up. Calling the tower is not the authorization process under Part 107, and a visual observer is optional help, never a substitute for authorization.
