Six letters, one simple question
The FAA slices the sky into classes A through G (there's no Class F in the U.S., so it's really six), and if you learned it from a textbook it feels like alphabet soup. For a drone pilot it collapses into one question: is this spot controlled or uncontrolled? That single answer tells you whether you can launch right now or need permission first.
Controlled airspace — Classes A, B, C, D, and E — is where air traffic control is actively managing traffic. Uncontrolled airspace, Class G, is everywhere ATC isn't running the show. Around airports, the controlled stuff stacks up in layers that get wider as they go higher, which is why everyone calls it the upside-down wedding cake.
Class G: where drones actually fly
Class G is uncontrolled airspace, and it starts at the surface across huge swaths of the country — including most of rural North Florida. No tower is directing traffic down there, so you don't need anyone's authorization to fly. Show up, do your preflight, launch.
Don't confuse 'uncontrolled' with 'no rules,' though. Every Part 107 rule still applies in Class G: stay at or below 400 feet AGL, keep the aircraft in visual line of sight, yield to all manned aircraft, and fly like the professional the FAA certified you to be. Class G just means you skip the permission step — not the responsibility.
Controlled airspace: ask first, then fly
Class B rings the busiest hub airports, Class C covers mid-size airports with radar service, and Class D surrounds smaller airports with an operating control tower. Class E is controlled airspace that fills in around and above the rest — sometimes all the way down to the surface near an airport, more often starting at 700 feet above the ground (that's the fuzzy magenta shading on a sectional chart).
Here's the rule that matters: to fly in Class B, C, or D, or in Class E that reaches the surface, you need ATC authorization before takeoff. In practice that means LAANC — you request the airspace through an app, and low-altitude grids are often approved on the spot. That Class E starting at 700 feet? You're capped at 400, so you're underneath it in Class G and no authorization is needed there.
And Class A? It starts at 18,000 feet MSL, where airliners cruise on instrument flight plans. You will never fly a drone there, so file it under 'good trivia' and move on.
Chart-reading shortcut: a dashed magenta line means Class E drops to the surface — that one needs authorization, same as B, C, and D. The soft magenta vignette means E starts at 700 feet AGL, which leaves the drone altitudes below it uncontrolled.
