Crew Resource Management sounds like airline jargon, but the idea is simple: use every resource available to you — people, checklists, briefings — instead of trying to be a one-person show. For a drone pilot, the biggest resource is often a visual observer. On a coastal shoot where I'm tracking the aircraft against a bright sky, a second set of eyes watching for boats, birds, and low-flying aircraft is worth more than any gadget on the controller.
A visual observer only helps if you brief them. Before launch, tell them exactly what you need: where to stand, what to watch for, and what words to use. "Aircraft low, from the south" is useful. "Uh, hey, look" is not. Agree on it before the props spin.
The other half of CRM is protecting your own attention. Airline crews call it a sterile cockpit — during critical phases, nobody talks about anything but flying. Borrow that. Launch, landing, and any close-in maneuver near people or structures are your critical phases. Brief clients and bystanders up front: questions are welcome once the drone is down or parked in a stable hover, not while it's threading past a roofline.
The 107.49 Preflight: Make It a Ritual
Part 107.49 requires a preflight inspection before every flight — not every job, every flight. Swap a battery on a construction progress shoot, and technically you're starting a new flight. The rule exists because the preflight is where you catch problems while they're still cheap: on the ground.
Make it the same ritual every time. Assess the operating area — people, obstacles, airspace, weather. Check the aircraft: props for nicks and cracks, battery seated and healthy, control links solid, failsafe behavior set the way you want it. Confirm everyone participating knows their role and the emergency plan. The order matters less than the consistency — a ritual you run identically every time is a ritual that catches the one thing that changed.
The day the preflight feels unnecessary is the day it matters most. Complacency is just the invulnerability attitude wearing work clothes: "it could happen to me" is the antidote, and the checklist is how you apply it.
Props, Batteries, and the Log
Follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidance — full stop. They built the aircraft, they know its service intervals and its weak points. Your job is to actually do what the manual says instead of skimming it once and winging it.
In practice, most drone failures trace back to two components: props and batteries. Props take invisible damage — a tip strike on a landing pad, a hairline crack you'd only catch by flexing the blade under good light. Batteries fail with more warning if you're paying attention: swelling, unusual heat, a cell that sags under load. Any of those signs means that battery is done flying. Land promptly on any abnormal behavior; LiPo fires are not something you negotiate with.
Then write it down. Log the issue, the flight hours, the fix. A maintenance log turns "I think this prop is fine" into "this prop has forty flights and one hard landing on it." Memory fades between a Tuesday real estate shoot and a Friday one on the coast — the log doesn't.
